Once again Matthew and I hiked up Walla Crag for New Years Eve. It was cold - below freezing (that’s cold for us) and the ground was frozen. It looked cloudy when we started, but after a while we walked up into the clouds and then out of them. The sky above was perfectly clear and with the lights of Keswick just a dim glow through the clouds the stars were the clearest I’ve seen for years. As we walked up the final bit to the summit the clouds stretched away across the lake making it look as if we could just walk across to Catbells. The fireworks were mostly just flickering glows, and there were some mysterious red lights that at first looked like people hiking up Skiddaw but were moving much too fast and eventually drifted off into the sky and disappeared. We spent a few minutes watching the stars and the lights and made a couple phone calls, then walked home.
Summer’s over
The summer holidays are well and truly over. Photos of our week in Wales (in Horton, on the Gower peninsula) and our week in Scotland (just outside Nairn) are in the gallery — see the link on the right.
Another old photo
Not sure who this is, but it’s probably a relative on the Casson side of the family. Any guesses?
Slide scanning has begun
I have today posted on Picasa the first box of slides that I’ve had scanned (by Pro-Scan). They look great, and at 4000dpi are much better than I could get with my own scanner. Now, I have to decide on a way to organise them. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 for my digital camera photos, but uploading from there isn’t too easy unless you want to use the one service it links with. Picasa is free and uploads easily to Picasa Web Albums, but has a few annoying limitations - such as not being able to set the date on the picture. Email me if you want links to the Picasa albums.
Photo: Four British Sailors in North Platte, NE
I’m going through an old photo album (there’s not much in it) and posting photos from it. This one has written on the back:
Taken at North Platte, Nebraska
Four British Sailors bound for San Francisco then parts unknown.
From Walla Crag to the Caribbean
Not much happening today. I spent the morning in my office going through my piles of stuff, and not accomplishing much. Shortly after noon I decided to see how quickly Patch and I could get up Walla Crag and back: 48 minutes (which was better than I expected). Patch is now sleeping on the floor of my office, totally wiped out. Tonight we’re going to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
Photo: At the Nut Club
Another old photo of my dad. I found this one in an old, mostly empty, photo album. It’s in an orange folder:
Keswick and Derwentwater in 2007
I hiked up Latrigg this morning and spent a few minutes trying to identify where the last photo was taken from. Here’s the 2007 version of Keswick and Derwentwater.
Old Postcard: Keswick and Derwentwater
I’ve scanned an old postcard I bought a while back - I’ll try to find one of my own photos that’s a bit more recent.
